This young artists concert is the culmination of a week of Professional Training Workshops at Carnegie Hall: The David Krakauer Workshop - Exploring Klezmer for Individuals and Chamber Ensembles.

An internationally acclaimed clarinetist and one of the foremost musicians in the new wave of klezmer music, David Krakauer leads a five-day workshop exploring both the traditional and experimental sides of klezmer. Mr. Krakauer and several important colleagues in the klezmer field will offer coaching and instruction in their various areas of expertise. The program will consist of coachings and lecture-demonstrations by each of the teaching artists. The workshop is open to musicians applying in ensembles and individually. Applicants must be between the ages of 18 and 30. There will be a concert culminating the week's workshops on Sunday, April 13 at 7:30pm at Zankel Hall.

To say that the Orion String Quartet seems to have been born to play together is a bit ironic: brothers Daniel and Todd Phillips have shared the first violin chair since the ensemble’s beginning in 1987. They return to Ann Arbor with the mind-blowing clarinet virtuoso David Krakauer in a concert that includes both standard repertoire and new work, including a UMS co-commission written by David Del Tredici.

For the first musical score commissioned by arts > World Financial Center, clarinet powerhouse David Krakauer and beat scientist Socalled were invited and given artistic liberty to create a new score for a silent film of their choice. They found their inspiration on a Klezmer Heritage Cruise that traveled down the Ukraine’s Dnieper River, stopping in cities along the way to explore the remaining Jewish communities and perform. A visit to the legendary city of Odessa, the location for Sergei Eisenstein’s classic, The Battleship Potemkin, was the catalyst for these musicians’ first-time collaborative film composition.

Commissioned for arts > World Financial Center 20th Birthday.

Special guest, clarinetist David Krakauer joins MMF's artists for a concert featuring works by Brahms, Golijov, and others. Mr. Krakauer is an artist of exceptional range, in-demand as a chamber player as well as a performer of other musical traditions, including traditional and modern Klezmer music. There will be two concerts, a short-version, young-person-friendly Family Concert at 2:00PM featuring excerpted material from the later full-format Late Afternoon Concert at 4:00PM. Both concerts take place at the Riley Center for the Arts on the campus of Burr & Burton Academy in Manchester, VT. The 2PM concert is a short-version Family Concert with excerpts from the later full 4PM concert.

Though Pulitzer Prize-winning composer David Del Tredici refuses to be pigeonholed, he is most often associated with song cycles. His new work—co-commissioned by Hancher and premiering in Iowa City—is a song-like composition that will be given voice by the Orion String Quartet (last heard at Hancher in performance with the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company) and clarinetist David Krakauer (who infected the auditorium with Klezmer Madness!). Experience a major musical moment featuring a quartet that “seem(s) to have been born to be together” (Los Angeles Times) and a man who “plays the clarinet miraculously” (The Clarinet).

Also on the program: a Haydn string quartet, Beethoven’s Quartet No. 9 in C Major, op. 59, no. 3, and Osvaldo Golijov’s K’vakart, a Rosh Hashanah prayer originally written for cantor and quartet.

In celebration of his 50th birthday, clarinet virtuoso David Krakauer takes his mission of revitalizing klezmer one step further in a collaboration with one of the great masters of funk/jazz, trombonist Fred Wesley-known for his work with James Brown, Bootsy Collins, and Parliament Funkadelic. This concert marks the world premiere of this new collaborative project between Krakauer and Wesley and will feature David Krakauer's Klezmer Madness! ensemble, complete with hip-hop beat architect Socalled, and a three-piece horn section led by Wesley. The result is an all-out klezmer-funk dance party!
